The unique jazz outfit have astounded listeners with the release of their self-titled third album. Although perhaps less jazz-infused than any of their previous work, it is still utterly gripping. Following a string of celebrated releases leaning on everything from kitschy euro sounds to deep funk and latin jazz, the relatively new to the scene Todd Terje has already made his mark within dance music circuits. Gems such as the cheese monster "Eurodans" and the latin disco-fuelled edit of Jacko's "Can't Help it" under his Tangoterje edit-moniker instantly made industry types and clubbers alike go bananas, and whatever the 25 year old Norwegian puts his fingers on, it always comes out with that crucial blend of musicality and playfulness.

Growing up in the rural village of Mjøndalen, dance music influences were scarce, and no, there was never any Diskoklubb there. Not a lot of obscure disco or acid house in his milk either. However, during the early/mid nineties dance culture sneaked it way into even the most remote parts of Norway, thanks to the popularity of acts like The Prodigy and national radio stations filling prime time slots with underground jocks Olle Abstract and Pål "Strangefruit" Nyhus. On the more personal level, Terje's sister was a close friend of the late Tore "Erot" Kroknes, and the tapes she brought home to the young Terje became a major source of inspiration. Playing around in his early teens on a crap PC together with his mate Dølle Jølle, Terje made his first attempts on house and jungle, which they played from cassette tapes on junior high school-dances. Maybe too young for old music back then, Terje reckoned that disco was all a bit silly - until Bjørn Torske's "Sexy Disco" caught his ears in 1999.

Training to become a pianist Terje enrolled at a local music school, but to his disappointment there wasn't much jazz being taught there. Gradually leaving the musical career path, he later moved on to studying physics at the University of Oslo. Although not longer aspiring to become a pianist, he was by no means over music. In 2001 Terje got in touch with Prins Thomas, who was at the time working at HS Records in Oslo. Thomas soon recognized his potential, and helped pushing Terje in the right directions. Oslo is a small place where like minded folks tend to join forces, and with his thorough musical understanding and nerdy like interest in old and new records spanning from that new Idjut Boys 12" to experimental synth bands very few of us have ever heard of, he soon became one of the key players on the Oslo electronic disco scene. Besides working on his own projects, Terje's played on some of Prins Thomas' tracks, and not to mention his remix of the Lindstrøm 12" "Another Station".

Is it house, funk, techno or disco? Terje is speaks of catchy rhythms, dubby sounds, dreamy synth layers, cinematic moods, a playful approach and searching for that one nerve when asked to describe his music, and the resistance to being pigeonholed is obvious. His next ambition is to make a concept album ala Voyage's first "around-the-world" release, if he can find time between other projects, studies and DJ gigs. Terje has already played around Europe, and is looking forward to gigs in Japan and NYC this summer. "I both like playing big room/macho style, but at the same time it's the girls I play for really. So I guess it's a mixture of high octane, leather homo-disco done up with mambo, coconuts and lipstick". Definitely one to look out for.

This is what Space Dimension Controller aka. Jack Hamill (from the one and only Belfast) describes his aim as.

Words cannot stress how much I love this guy's music. Think Julio Bashmore combined with the tastiest old funk tracks floating through space, drinking a fruit smoothie.

This combination adds up to be one of the best around. Even R&S records thought so. I guess that is why they signed him!

I picked up this term's issue of the FLY, a free magazine circulated around the UK.

Most of the issue is dedicated to new artists of 2012 and the best ones from 2011.

Usually I flick through and do not know most of the artists and when I research them I find that they are dull new punk bands or bands that are described as the new "Sum 41".

To my amazement, when I flicked through this months issue I saw in front of me a list of new artists that either 1. I have already mentioned in this blog or 2. They are on my long list of people to blog about!

I thought that because of this I will make a long list here of some of these artists and then hopefully in the near future we can explore them further, together!

CLOCK OPERA

I first heard of Clock Opera when my girlfriend sent me this remix of an Au Revoir Simone song by him.

I was like Holy Moley this is good. So I searched more. I am subscribed to Amazing Radio's YouTube channel and luckily I found a song called belongings by Clock Opera on that. I listened and again it blew my mind.

The music video is sicccccckkk as well.

All in all Clock Opera can't do any wrong in my books.

Today at work I brought my headphones. This meant I could listen to some music. Because I was "working" this meant the music was in the back ground so I just had my iTunes on Shuffle and wasn't really thinking about the music that was filtering into my system.

Occasionally however several songs caught my attention. Either I hadn't heard them for a long time or it was somehow the first time listening to it. Anyway, I put all of the songs that caught my attention into a playlist so I could share them with you on here.

VONDELPARK

Vondelpark are a recent signing to legendary Belgian dance label R&S Records, and with the release of their second EP NYC Stuff and NYC Bags, they truly show why they are turning heads. Unlike most of their label mates, Vondelpark create music that is drenched in reverb and delay, reflecting the band’s overall shyness. Only a few internet searches reveal the band’s conscious effort to remain mostly hidden. In a one-off interview with Vice magazine, front man Lewis Rainsbury remarks that ‘We’ve all been in bands before and this time we’re taking a very cautious approach’.

NYC Stuff and NYC Bags is certainly not an EP that shouts for attention; instead one that hides in the corner, fragile and wary. Once the listener engages, it quietly cries heartbreak whilst yearning for something better. Opening number TV uses an array of interesting guitar lines that fade in and out while Rainsbury fittingly muffles the title along with numerous semi-intelligible words. The beat sits comfortably underneath, giving the track the calm groove it requires. In a similar fashion to their first EP Sauna, there is heavy use of sampling of old garage records, but as standout tracks Camels and Outro for NYC show, there is a more mature approach that gives the tracks an ethereal and more thoughtful sound. Amidst Vondelpark’s washy, chillwave production there is an honest sound.

This promising EP now points towards a full length release, perhaps one where the band steps into the limelight, or will they continue to remain masked by their music...?

I have a tradition/ritual that my friend Aaron passed on to me. When in a record store like Head or Jumbo I have to buy a CD for next to nothing. I have found some crap artists and some class ones from doing this but I feel that it is a good way to experience the pleasure that comes from listening to a CD and it kind of feels like you are keeping the music industry running in doing so.

Hi. I haven't posted in about two months. That is not to say I have not been listening to music. Quite the contrary. I have been listening to far too much music. Because of deadlines and laziness I put off posting but over the next few days I am absolutely going to rinse this page with over two months worth of music I have been listening to.

My music taste has really developed over the past few months and I believe it is safe to say that I have taken a more electronic route even though I still enjoy band music, I just haven't really been following it much recently.

My obsession with Gold Panda started last year when my flatmate played me his song You(1).

Gold Panda is London born Derwin Panda who conducts loop pedals, samplers, drum pads, laptops as if they were a beautiful orchestra. He uses all this technology to create some of the most exciting unique sounds that will all blow your mind. I had an unbelievable night and would urge everyone to experience the magic that is Gold Panda.

THE SKIN I LIVE IN (OST)

Pedro Almodovar's most recent feature film is The Skin I Live In, (La Piel Que Habito) based on Thierry Jonquet's novel, Tarantula, staring a return-to-form Antonio Banderas and Elena Anaya.

It is a masterpiece of a film, nominated for the Palme D'Or and tipped to be nominated for several Academy Awards.

Almodovar used Trentmoller's 'Shades Of Marble' in the soundtrack, as well as the original score. The song fits in perfectly with the movie, even though it shouldn't, with it's House vibe contrasting the classical elements elsewhere in the film.

Alberto Iglesias (who also scored Kite Runner and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) composed the beautiful, original score, encompassing the right amount of tension and delicate notes, balancing them perfectly with those elements of the film.

The soundtrack also includes numbers from Chris Garneau and Concha Buika, reflecting the stark, melancholic points perfectly:

So I was watching some HD surfing videos (standard Saturday morning procedure) and one that I watched had an unreal tune over it. Luckily the video had the name of the artist on it, Tank.

That video can be found here

Straight away I hunted this Tank guy out and all I found was a bio on his Facebook page that simply says.

My name is Oliver Tank, I'm 21, I live in Sydney and I make and perform music.
My influences are Jon Hopkins, Boards of Canada and James Blake.

After reading this I didn't poke much further because really ... that's all you need to know. With such great influences and music that is put under the genre of "dreamwave" this guy is definatly worth a closer listen.

Oliver Tank's track Last Night I Saw Everything In Slow Motion is a stunning piece of artistry. This track really makes you feel emotional, and I can't put a finger on why. Maybe its the combination of sounds like; the gentle vocals from The Postal Service, electronic bliss from James Blake's fingers or the string harmonies from the heart of Ireland itself.

The last gig in Leeds before I came home for summer was SBTRKT and he was unbelievable.

Here is the video for his new release PHARAOHS ft. Roses Gabor.

He plays all of his tracks completely live by using loops and real drums. The result is some electronic pieces of genius. Here is a video I took of SBTRKT in Leeds.

DATA SELECT PARTY

So I dug out my iPod for a trip to Dublin there a few days ago and as I scrolled through the artists I realised how fickle I was with my music. I hardly listen to any of the songs I listened to two years ago and there are some cracking songs on there. My conclusion was to do a blog post on my top ten artists from the iPod and research what they are doing today in 2011.

Number Three | Data Select Party

Data Select Party were an unreal unsigned band from London I used to listen to around 2005/2006. In searching for their stuff recently I found out that the band split in 2009. Even still, I defiantly think their music is worth a listen.

This video by 30 minutes of ... is basically Data Select Party performing every one of their songs live for Channel M music.

Data Select Party released three EPs the first being "The Charm Is Charmless" the second was "No Girls Allowed" and the third was "Hanging out with Humans".

CRYSTAL FIGHTERS

Crystal Fighters were one of the first electronic bands I ever listened to. Forming in 2007 it wasn't until 2009 that they released their first official single, Xtatic Truth.

Xtatic truth is one of few early records that Sebastian Pringle the lead vocalist sings on. After Xtatic Truth the band released I Love London in 2009.

Following I Love London Crystal Fighters released four more singles In The Summer and Follow/Swallow, in 2010 & At Home and Plage in 2011.

THE ANSWERING MACHINE

It was 2007 that I first started listening to The Answering Machine with their song Lightbulbs. I think I used this song for every short video I made back then because it is so catchy.

Here is the music video which I thought was unreal at the time.

The Answering Machine formed in 2005 at Manchester Uni. Their first single Oklahoma was released in 2006, then Silent Hotels and Lightbulbs in 2007 and then Cliffer in 2009. After these three singles I stopped following the bands progress. Since then they released two albums 2009/2011 and a single 2010.

Finally they released their second album Lifeline in early 2011 before disbanding in May earlier this year. To announce this the band posted a letter to their fans on their website. Here is the letter.

Discopolis are a Scottish 3 piece definitely worth keeping an eye on! Due to the backing they have received from BBC Radio 1's Introducing, Discopolis' disco house vibe has started getting some well deserved air time on national radio. If you haven't heard them there, they will also be making appearances at Reading and Leeds today and tomorrow. Well worth checking out if you're about!

Three Blind Wolves sound similar to Fleet Foxes but with a punch to the face by four Scottish lads. I predict that Three Blind Wolves are set to be hugggee.

Words cannot describe how much I love the summery sounds of Northern Irish band Kowalski!

Their new single comes out on the 22nd August. Write that down!

I'm sure the Paddy, Paddy, Louis and Tom would not be offended if I said that they are one of the few bands that are far better live than recorded (and recorded they are unreal).

Kowalski are a down to earth, realistic band who aren't trying to conquer the world, just trying to make good music.

TOKiMONSTA or Rabbit Monster (Korean) is one of the few artists that has been given access to the golden brand of 'Brain Feeder' following the jazzy, trip-hop, atmospheric work of Flying Lotus.

TOKiMONSTA's sound has been described as a 'romantic excursion under starry expanses'.

TOKiMONSTA is the work of one woman, Jennifer Lee, from L.A. who was an unfocused classical pianist but turned her hand to producing after she left school. She uses her classical knowledge in her music, perfectly combining vintage raw sounds with modern trip-hop beats.

Hi Lucy Rose, to those who don't already know could you tell us what age you are, where you are from and how you started playing music?
I’m 21 (turning 22 very soon though on June 20th) and I'm from Warwickshire but moved to London 4 years ago after school.

Hmm, I started playing music in the school orchestra really (percussion and drums) and then picked up the guitar when I was a bit older.

Did you always want to play music or were your sights set on something else?

Didn't particularly always want to do music, I kinda wanted to be a radio presenter when I was younger, but I sort of fell into it really.

What made you move to the 'Big City'?

Hmm, I just thought it was the right move, I always liked London.

When did you first start writing songs and was there an aim to be famous or did it begin as a personal journey?

Probably when I was about 15 I first mumbled my first song... and then it progressed from there into proper songs.

I have no aim at all to be famous, that scares me a lot... but to play a show every night and keep writing would be great.

Who or what inspires you to continue writing your music?

Other music (especially live unknown artists at open mics) good films, going out, doing things.

It's hard to know what music influences me as I listen to such a wide variety.

Since working with them I’ve become really good friends with all of them really, and it's nice to be able to play music together. There have been a lot of funny good times, but probably none I should repeat.

Portico Quartet are a four piece jazz group from London. This track, Paper Scissor Stone, is the first track on their second album Isla, which was released in 2009. It features a lot of beautiful soprano sax melodies. I really love their distinctive and modern sound, which is characterised by the use of the hang (a percussion instrument) on all their tracks.

OK. So I have a confession.

I think I am literally in love with Lucy Rose (Lucy Parton)

I first found Lucy from WatchListenTell's YouTube page when she played Night Bus for them.

As soon as I heard the opening riff to the song I knew I liked it, however when I heard Lucy's voice, my spine tingled. It was like no other.

Lucy has toured the UK with Bombay Bicycle Club over the past number of years but this summer has loads of her own shows lined up. For example, Lucy is playing Bestival on 11th Sept.

Yuck, an indie band from London featuring Daniel and Max formerly from Cajun Dance Party. Having released their self titled debut album in early 2011 and touring with Egyptian Hip Hop among others. Yuck have been gathering fans and great reviews along the way.

Having played a UK tour in the last month or so, they are off on tour of the US playing only glasto festival this summer in the UK. However the way things are going they will be around for quite some time and not just a flash in the pan.

Originally from Zimbabwe, Tinashé moved to London and has been writing, producing and releasing some properly uplifting, fresh music for a while now.

Personally, I think it's well worth while checking out the acoustic versions, like Mayday, Mr. Presumption & Saved. Which I think have the edge over the album versions.

This is one of my favourite tracks, Mr. Presumption recorded for Channel 4's Intros.

MUTEMATH must be one of the freshest bands around. The four-piece from New Orleans combine standard instrumentation with glitchy electronics, intricate breakdowns and crazy live performances for one hell of a show.

DIESEL ISLAND DISCO

Adam and I went to the Diesel Island Disco in Leeds at the Nation of Shopkeepers on Wednesday. (18.05.11)

We went to see Beat Connection a twosome I recently blogged about. They were amazing.

After Beat Connection we saw Niki & the Dove who weren't really our cup of tea however still check them out.

Then we saw SBTRKT an artist who we were looking forward to seeing. He was unreal.

Tropics is 22 year old Chris Ward from Southampton who recently signed with Planet Mu. He makes music that sounds like those long summer evenings, spent gazing at the sky.

Here's 'Melorr' from his EP 'Soft Vision'.

He's playing a few festivals here and there this summer, but appears to be mainly focusing on his first full length album. Eyes Peeled.x

This is the 16 bit remix of Twice by Little Dragon, a Swedish electronic band. They've been around for ages but I only discovered them a couple of years ago. This song will always have memories of Summer 2010 for me, so seems like a good start to this year's sunny season...
